The Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy in Bochum

A groundbreaking ceremony for cyber security and data protection

In the past, Adam Opel AG cars rolled off the production line on the new Mark 51°7 development site in Bochum.

The new Campus for Science and Technology marks the beginning of a new era for the site. The ecosystem for research institutions being created there will also be home to the state-of-the-art new building for the Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy. The ground-breaking ceremony for this innovative project, which also stands for structural change in the Ruhr region, took place on October 21, 2024. An old industrial site is being transformed into a home for cutting-edge international research. Around 350 researchers in 18 research groups will work here in future on concepts and solutions for cyber security and data protection for the benefit of people. Ina Brandes, Minister for Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia, was also on site in Bochum for the ground-breaking ceremony.

Eller + Eller Architekten developed a structural concept for the complex research tasks that optimally supports the internal collaborative exchange of knowledge as well as cooperation with external research groups. The building design enables topic-focused work, interaction and communication through flexibly adaptable laboratory and office areas. The aim is to be one step ahead in IT security, detect hacker attacks at an early stage, prevent them in good time and reliably protect sensitive data.

Planned costs: 62 million euros. The state of NRW is funding the construction with around 50 million euros.

MVD is responsible for the structural design
