Wood as a building material.
A multi-talent

Wood is a renewable resource and therefore a valuable building material for sustainable and forward-looking construction. Wood is very interesting for structural design due to its good load-bearing capacity and low weight. Due to its fiber structure, wood absorbs high forces in the longitudinal direction and at the same time has excellent physical building properties for passive or low-energy construction. Thanks to innovative new developments in joining technology, there are now more and more ways of using wood for sophisticated load-bearing structures.

Great potential. If used correctly.

With its positive energy balance, wood is an important cornerstone for sustainable construction with enormous potential. At MVD, we have been planning with the positive properties of wood for more than 30 years. As early as 1992, the Ulm University building project was awarded the German Timber Construction Prize.

In order to make the most of the positive effects of wood, it should be sourced regionally to ensure that the positive energy balance is not lost during transportation. There are technical and economic limits to building with wood, even for large spans and in terms of height and the number of storeys.

Hybrid concepts. A smart way forward.

When weighing up economy and ecology, timber-concrete hybrid solutions are a promising approach. Pure timber structures often fail due to the significantly higher costs. With a holistic understanding, the right combination and an open approach, we usually find a sensible solution for all construction projects. To do this, we compare the alternatives and their advantages and disadvantages with a cost estimate at an early stage - to create planning and decision-making certainty from the outset.
