The new research and institute building for geosciences and environmental sciences will house laboratories, administration, seminar rooms, workshops, a library, exhibition space and extensive archives for the state natural science collection. Despite its sculptural and striking appearance, the building blends in homogeneously with the existing buildings. The meandering V-shape creates a glass atrium that both emphasizes the entrance situation and continues the wide forecourt in a public exhibition hall.
The 8-storey reinforced concrete skeleton structure with two basement floors in a tightly built-up, cramped inner city location and its 21 m high, glass-roofed atrium with spans of up to 22 m and a free-standing 400m2 glass façade presented a real challenge for the structural engineers at MVD. However, this was mastered perfectly, as were the internal connecting bridges with a span of approx. 21.5 m, suspended via stay cables.
