Vogt Hess School

The new building for core time and all-day care at Vogt-Hess-Gemeinschaftsschule is a two-storey structure that connects the existing school building with the gymnasium. A supply channel was built over for this purpose. The foundation was carried out as a shallow foundation on individual and strip foundations. The new building contains rooms for all-day supervision and classrooms for preparatory classes. They are complemented by a multi-purpose piazza in the middle of the building. Various open spaces are grouped around this structure: a break deck and exercise and creative areas. The rooms themselves are spread over two storeys. The foyer at the base of the new building can be accessed at ground level from the schoolyard. The canopy can be used as a covered break area and at the same time creates a dry path connection to the existing building.

The materiality is reduced to wood and concrete with floor-to-ceiling glazing. The sloping floor is a solid construction, while the upper floor above is a solid timber construction. The ceilings above the piazza and the common areas are made of glulam with visible girder grids, while the classrooms have cross-laminated timber walls and board stack ceilings. The load-bearing corridor walls are made of R30 cross-laminated timber. A flexible room layout is possible for future changes of use.
