Ludwigsburg
August-Lämmle-School
A school location in Ludwigsburg's Oßweil district that had grown over decades was to be reorganized in line with current functional, energy and structural requirements. Instead of choosing the often seemingly simpler route of demolition and complete new construction, both the identity-forming turn-of-the-century school building and the simple but functional post-war building from the 1950s were retained. With the help of a new, intermediate component, a new overall unit was created that takes into account the requirements of the established location as well as the demands of contemporary school operations.
The new 2-storey connecting building was erected as a reinforced concrete skeleton structure with wide-span flat ceilings. In the center is the cafeteria, a 300 m² column-free space that can also be used as an event hall. The ceiling loads in this area are transferred via the corridor wall of the floor above, which is designed as a slab supporting structure. The two existing buildings were converted, refurbished and upgraded in terms of fire resistance in line with the change in use.
