IKB International

Due to its location, the IKB Luxembourg building has great significance for the urban identity. As the first of four buildings at the intersection of Rue Erasme Rue Leon Hengen on the Kirchberg plateau, it is visible from afar. The figure of simple cubes defined in the development plan proves to be a clever strategy. The upper floors are reduced to a stone, anthracite-colored block and appear to float above the transparent first floor. The sun protection made of matt-gloss shutters connects the block and conveys lightness and elegance.

Despite the floor areas of 640m2 each, the supporting structure for the ceiling loads only requires two internal columns. This was made possible by the prestressing of the flat ceilings and slender composite columns with a solid steel core. The design idea of the transparent first floor corners of the building was realized via parapets in the floors above, which cantilever 10 m over the corner as prestressed beams.
