INTERIM VENUE OF THE STUTTGARTER OPER

The Stuttgart State Opera is one of the most important opera houses in Europe. In order to maintain operations during the renovation and expansion, the interim venue is being built on the C1 site at the Wagenhallen.

As part of the competition, MVD heinlewischer Architekten assisted with the structural design. The main idea of the competition design was to create an interim venue that is open, inviting and self-confident and meets the requirements of a recognized opera house. At the same time, it was to be resource-saving, low-emission and, above all, flexible in use and demountable.

A combination of steel/wood construction and individual concrete components was planned for the supporting structure itself. In the interests of sustainability and the "cradle to cradle" concept, no composite structures were planned. This means that the steel, timber and concrete components can be dismantled, recycled and reused separately. The use of CO₂-minimized cements and RC concrete was planned to minimize the CO₂ intensity of the concrete used for bracing cores, the stage tower, the secondary stages and for foundation components.

The large spans and cantilevers in the area of the main hall and the rehearsal halls were to be constructed using steel lattice girders made from recycled steel. The use of steel elements from dismantled or demolished structures was considered for the subordinate steel construction elements. The basic elements of the supporting structure were developed to be modular and removable in the standard areas. This allows parts of the building to be dismantled or repurposed and further developed once the venue is no longer in use.
