Klinikum Stuttgart Katharinenhospital

Klinikum Stuttgart is the largest non-university maximum care provider among the hospitals in Baden-Württemberg. The heart of the clinic, the Katharinenhospital in Stuttgart-Mitte, is being restructured in 3 construction phases and geared towards the future. Many hospital departments, which were previously spread across the city, will now be structurally linked at one location. The construction period is planned for a period of 20 years. In order to maintain the functionality of the clinic during all construction phases, the restructuring will be divided into stages. The new radiotherapy buildings, House F as the new main entrance and the modular building for the uses of the former Bürgerhospital have already been put into operation. The replacement building for House A will follow in the next stages and, after its completion, the replacement buildings for Houses B and E will follow.

The two new 10-storey buildings on Kriegsbergstrasse, with their striking cantilevered nursing floors, were a challenge for the structural engineers. On the one hand, there were the foundations on difficult building ground, the integration of the 3 basement floors into the groundwater and the complex construction pits in the narrow existing buildings. On the other hand, there were the atriums with their large spans and the widely projecting care floors. In terms of construction, this task was solved with prestressing without a bond. Numerous conversion measures and interim structures such as connecting bridges and supply tunnels were required to maintain functionality during the construction period. All load-bearing structures of the adjacent existing buildings and the new buildings were and are recorded and referenced in an overall BIM model.
