Municipal Hospital

Karlsruhe Municipal Hospital is the largest hospital in the Middle Upper Rhine region and a maximum care provider. The campus, which dates back to the Wilhelminian era, is complemented by various modern hospital buildings. The award-winning design for House M as a "new center" connects all adjacent hospital centers with a central identity-creating main thoroughfare. The urban character is preserved in its permeability; different heights, proportions and materials combine to form a whole. The entrance hall with a prestressed flat ceiling with spans is the central point of identification and opens up access to all buildings. The hospital's surgical departments are united with their respective clinics and outpatient departments at the level of the interdisciplinary emergency department.

The floor plans of the wards are arranged in a long bar, allowing easy orientation and optimal functional conditions. Wards can be separated or combined as required.

The new building comprises the clinic building (House M), the new institute building (House I) with laboratories, offices and operating rooms, blood bank, pharmacy and classrooms with training laboratories and the new refrigeration center (House G2).
The clinic building House M with operating theaters, wards and examination rooms is designed as a 7-storey reinforced concrete skeleton structure. The institute building House I with its laboratories, offices and operating rooms, blood bank, pharmacy and classrooms with training laboratories is a 5-storey reinforced concrete skeleton structure and the refrigeration center House G2 is a steel structure on a solid basement box in reinforced concrete construction.

The foundation of all buildings is a shallow foundation on individual and strip foundations. The excavation pit, which is up to 8 m deep, was secured with anchored bored girder and bored pile walls.
The planning takes into account the possibility of adding two additional storeys to Building M as well as the underpinning of the refrigeration plant in Building G in the jet grouting steel. The project was planned according to the BIM method.
