New Cafeteria Building and Vocational School Expansion

Two municipal vocational schools and a vocational high school will gain additional classrooms and a new cafeteria. They are housed in two buildings listed as individual historic monuments in the immediate vicinity of the “Königsplatz” and “Lenbachhaus” complex. Several new group rooms will be located on the ground floor of a listed existing building. Two additional group rooms, fourteen classrooms, a daycare center on the ground floor, and a teacher’s lounge will be created in the new wing. The new cafeteria will provide lunch service and will also be used as a multipurpose and event space outside of school hours.

The unique layout of the historically protected school buildings necessitates a visual reduction in the mass of the new structure. The new cafeteria building lies flat and spread out at the level of the playground, which is lowered by about two meters below street level. There is a height difference of about 80 cm between the building and the playground itself, which is utilized as a stage elevation.

The new classroom building with daycare center is a reinforced concrete structure featuring point-supported flat slabs on columns and individual wall partitions with spans of up to 8.50 m. Designed to span existing subway tunnels as a shallow foundation on an elastically bedded floor slab for optimized load distribution. The basement, which is in contact with the groundwater, was waterproofed using a “White Tank Plus” system with a fresh concrete composite membrane. The staircases are designed as freestanding folded-plate structures made of reinforced concrete.

The structural framework of the cafeteria was constructed using cast-in-place concrete with a high density of building services due to its use as a kitchen. The dining hall ceiling is a composite slab optimized for weight and clear height, featuring steel beams with cavity-filled concrete and a span of approximately 12.40 m. Because the roof is used as a recess area, comprehensive dynamic analyses of the dining hall ceiling were required. A combined bored-pile and slab foundation made it possible to avoid interference with the adjacent existing foundations to the greatest extent possible.

The recessed second floor of the new classroom building features a reinforced concrete flat roof supported by reinforced concrete columns. The glazed exterior walls are mullion-transom structures made of glued laminated timber or steel with aluminum cladding.
