Prinz-Eugen-Park Residential Complexes

Solid structural engineering is also the foundation of traditional residential construction. The goal of the municipal housing authority GEWOFAG, as the project owner, was to create affordable rental apartments. The result is two L-shaped building blocks, each with a shared underground parking garage. The four- to six-story structures, constructed using joint-free cast-in-place concrete, comprise more than 280 apartments of varying sizes as well as two daycare centers. In addition, three residential groups receiving outpatient care and a residents’ lounge are integrated into the complex. The underground parking garages offer space for up to 200 cars and roughly twice that number of bicycles. The challenge for the structural engineering was the diverse usage requirements. Small, compartmentalized residential units on the upper levels; large spans with maximum flexibility on the ground floors; and compatibility with the parking space dimensions in the underground garage—ideally extending in a straight line down to the foundation without major support structures. The number of load-bearing elements in the exterior surfaces was reduced as much as possible to allow for freedom in the facade design and the choice of materials.

Particular attention was paid to the design of the connection details between different materials and to the requirements for thermal and moisture protection, sound insulation, sustainability of building materials, and high cost-effectiveness. Depending on the requirements for sound insulation, design, and structural integrity, the exterior walls were constructed as single-shell walls with thermal insulation bricks or as multi-shell walls with reinforced concrete, serving as load-bearing structures. The stairwells are made of exposed concrete, consisting of in-situ concrete and precast elements

The design was carried out using BIM methodology.
