Stuttgart

Bosch area

The new construction and conversion of the Bosch Areal with a cinema center, restaurants, shopping mall, literature house, administration and apartments was based on the motto "Historic buildings meet modern technology". From the point of view of monument protection, all conversion measures required a particularly sensitive approach to the building fabric. All structural alterations, such as the installation of new elevator shafts or the addition of storeys to the head buildings, had to be carried out in such a way that the character of the historic buildings remained unchanged. The buildings on the Bosch site in Stuttgart were one of the first structures in Baden-Württemberg to be built between 1910 and 1912 using reinforced concrete, which was still a new material at the time. With the exception of the administration building, today's Literaturhaus, all the buildings were originally used for industrial purposes and were constructed as skeleton structures with high load-bearing capacities in accordance with this purpose. From today's perspective, this is a very sustainable structural concept.

The historic ensemble of buildings was then supplemented by the new cinema center, the 3-storey underground car park and the high-rise building on the corner of Breitscheidstrasse and Silberburgstrasse. In order to enable the 6 cinemas with a total of 1,500 seats desired by the operator in the limited space available, all structural dimensions had to be reduced to a minimum. High-strength B85 concrete was used for the load-bearing wall panels and a new type of prestressing system was developed for the highly loaded ceiling beams of the cinemas - a mixture of prefabricated elements with prestressed bed prestressing and prestressing without bonding in the in-situ concrete addition.
