L-Bank

The new L-Bank administration building in Stuttgart's city center also set new urban planning accents: Three buildings connected by a glass-roofed customer hall - according to the design by mdk architects - was both a design and a technical construction challenge for MVD: difficult conditions for the foundation and excavation pit, a sophisticated jointless construction of the supporting structure and bold, large spans. As a result, the building set urban planning standards and received several awards for its architecture.

The new administration building for the Landeskreditbank Baden - Württemberg was no ordinary planning assignment, as the key data alone show: A constructed area of 175,000 m³, consisting of a seven-storey office building, a circular building with a diameter of 32 m and a triangular building with 36 m edge length. In addition, there is a customer hall with a glass roof, supported by a few very slender columns and a three-storey underground garage.

The foundation on the difficult ground conditions was carried out using a combined pile-plate foundation (KPP) with up to 22 m long in-situ concrete piles and an 80 cm thick base plate. The supporting structure of the L-shaped main building with a length of 210 meters in a joint-free design was the next challenge. MVD opted for 25 cm thick flat slabs with centric prestressing to avoid possible cracks. For the first time, newly developed coupler anchor systems were used at the concreting joints, which made it unnecessary to overlap the tendons in the construction joints. In the triangular building with a side length of 36 m, all slabs can be constructed with a flat slab of just 40 cm using prestressing without a bond, reducing the building height by 2 m with three slabs compared to a solution with beams.
