Tuebingen
Research Center M3, University Hospital
The new building provides Tübingen with a modern research center that offers perfect working conditions for interdisciplinary tumor research. The new research building blends in with the existing research area close to the hospital on Schnarrenberg. Flexible laboratories and offices for the scientific work of 18 research groups from different disciplines have been created on five levels with around 4,500 square meters of floor space in the new research center. Communication zones enable a creative interdisciplinary exchange between the approximately 250 scientists.
The 7-storey building was designed as a flexibly usable reinforced concrete skeleton structure. The hillside location with a height difference of 3 storeys was a challenging task both for the supporting structure and for the design of the excavation pit. Added to this were the requirements for earth safety in zone 3, the highest earthquake category in Germany. The design for this load was based on the principle of "flexible at the top - rigid at the bottom". The compliant, stiffening access cores of the upper storeys are clamped into the rigid box of the lower storeys on the slope.
