Freiberg
Schlossplatzquartier TU Bergakademie
During the conversion of the Schlossplatzquartier into the Freiberg Mining Academy's institute building, three former residential and commercial buildings, some of which were up to 400 years old, were renovated and upgraded in line with the strict requirements for the preservation of historical monuments. Despite the requirements of a modern university building, it was not only possible to preserve the historic facades and archaeological finds in the building ground, but also to revitalize valuable Renaissance architecture inside the buildings.
In addition to extensive securing and underpinning measures on the neighboring buildings for the construction of the building pits, complex construction conditions also had to be planned for the preservation of the listed building fabric. The historic earthen ceilings were mainly reinforced using a timber-concrete composite construction. In the buildings and parts of buildings affected by partial collapses, slender skeleton constructions in solid construction were erected behind the facades worthy of preservation. By covering the historic atriums with slender steel and glass constructions, it was possible to preserve the overall character of the building from a conservation point of view and at the same time significantly enhance its use.
