Ulm

University Hospital - Surgical Clinic

The new building of the Ulm Surgical Clinic impresses with its flexibility, sustainability and transparency. The clinic's ten crossbars, which house the treatment rooms, operating theaters and laboratories, are spanned by the so-called "floating ward block" - an impressive structure with a supporting structure that ensures the greatest possible transparency on the first floor level for the approximately 180 m long main corridor.

The main corridor is enclosed by an open glass façade suspended from cables on all sides. By using the cables, it was possible to reduce the load-bearing elements of the façade to a minimum and thus achieve a high level of transparency. In addition to the transparent access levels, the three upper floors, which cantilever up to 8 m on all sides, also contribute to the floating impression of the ward block. The prestressed flat ceilings of the nursing floors span up to 15.60 m freely between the cantilevered wall panels. This creates freely usable, column-free areas of up to 300m2.
